CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Minnie took to her assignment with a newfound passion. In quick and tremulous tones, she brought Bonnie and Anne up to speed, the other women both amused and disgusted at Miss Gaber's oversight in not providing Minnie her true name.

“She had us up to all sorts of nonsense. And for no good reason,” Lady Anne hissed. They were congregated at the back of the Zone 7 lot, trying to grab as many SH files as they could. There were considerably more of these than there had been under GA.

Bonnie laughed, “I think it's a lark.” She was still wearing her tennis outfit, and had trotted in that shift with a beautiful oak tennis racket and a smirk of accomplishment. “But she's really not the brightest bulb in the Tiffany lamp though is she?”

Minnie's brow furrowed. “Intelligence isn't everything in a person.”

“I didn't say that it was,” Bonnie teased. “But I don't hear you disagreeing.” She slipped a few of the SH files in with the rest of her contracts, and headed back for her desk.

“She has a point, you know,” Lady Anne did the same.

Minnie followed after them. She'd taken nearly all the files left on her desk by Deborah May the shift before and had swapped them out for files with participants whose last names started with SH. Her shift flew by. Gesh only came by twice to check on her work, and both times his arrival was successfully delayed by the flirtatious advances of Lady Anne. Minnie had had enough time to process the SH contract she'd been checking, type up her summary, and cover the evidence by shuffling the correct files to the top of her work-piles. Gesh had been none the wiser.

She felt her confidence growing. What did it matter if there were three times as many SH contracts as GA? What did it matter if Minnie faced a painful and soul-ending Slamming if she ever got caught? Her mind, jumbled and jittered though it was, was consoled almost to hilarity by the thought of helping dear sweet Penelope. It worked with a kind of dual mechanism. One side processed the information necessary to review the contracts and maintain some level of secrecy, and the other replayed the last few hours, particularly those spent in the penthouse suite of Miss Gaber. Or Miss Shadid. But she hadn't asked Minnie to call her that. Pareesima. That was the name she'd offered to Minnie like a glass of water. And she'd let her call her Adelaide. And she'd asked to see her again tomorrow. Minnie's cheeks grew warm at the memory. She could hardly wait. But wait she must.

She went to visit Marty and Nigel after her shift. She recounted what had happened, leaving nothing out to the great worry and stern admonitions of Nigel, who was still very much convinced that they would all be caught and sent to the Slammer for their conspired transgressions.

“I sure hope you know what you're doing,” Nigel said. He looked tired, strung-out.
